Google Drive is a safe place for all your files and puts them within reach from any smartphone, tablet, or computer. Files in Drive – like your videos, photos, and documents – are backed up safely so you can’t lose them. Google Drive's Material Design was hinted at late last year, and has begun rolling out to iOS devices this week. Android users will have to wait to access the visual and navigational overhaul.

Now playing:Watch this: How to get started with Google's Backup and Sync app

Google's new Backup and Sync app replaces both the company's Drive and Photos desktop apps for Windows PCs and Macs. You can use the app to back up the contents of your entire computer -- or just selected folders.

Set up Backup and Sync

First, download the app from the Google Drive page or from the Google Photos page. You'll end up with the same app either way.

FrostWire downloads super fast using a distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing torrent network. By splitting the file into multiple chunks and downloading from many sources at the same time, it allows you to download media files as large as high-quality (Flac or wav) full songs or entire music albums, HD movies and 4K video many times faster than conventional methods. Android won't download apps. All these features are wrapped into one free app, so you can find what you love easily, download music, movies and video directly to your phone or tablet - fast & with no download size or speed limits, and then create playlists to play your music offline without wi-fi or mobile data.

Next, launch the app, sign into your Google account and select which folders you'd like to continuously back up to Google Drive. For photos, you have two options: High quality or Original quality. High quality will compress photos larger than 16 megapixels and videos with a resolution higher than 1080p but these compressed files will not count against your data cap. Google Drive provides 15GB for free but after that, you'll need to pay. You can get 100GB for $19.99 a year (about £15 or AU$25), or 1TB for $99.99 a year (about £75 or AU$125).

There's also a checkbox to Upload photos and videos to Google Photos. Use this option if you want all of the photos you have stored on your computer to show up on Google Photos.

I left this unchecked, because I already have the Google Photos mobile app backing up every photo I take on my iPhone and don't want all of the old photos on my Mac jamming up my Google Photos feed. I just want my Mac's photos safely backed up to Google Drive and don't feel the need to be able to browse through them on Google Photos.

Next, click the OK button and Backup and Sync will start uploading.

Sync can be a two-way street

Backup and Sync not only syncs folders on your computer to Google Drive. It also can sync folders you have in Drive to your computer, so you can access them when you're offline. You can choose to download and sync your entire, top-level My Drive folder on Google Drive, or you can select specific folders.

Waiting To Download Google Drive Problem

Set a delete rule

After setting up Backup and Sync and completing your initial uploads and downloads, when you return to the app and open Preferences, you'll see an area labeled Removing items. Here you can choose how Drive reacts when you delete a file on your computer. It's set up to ask you if you also want to delete it everywhere, meaning from Drive, too, but you can also set it to delete files from Drive without asking first or to keep files there when you delete them from your computer.

New Computers folder on Google Drive

The folders you selected for Backup and Sync will show up in a new Computers folder on Google Drive. You'll see any computers on which you have Backup and Sync running listed in this folder. Click on a computer and then you'll see your hierarchy of folders that you choose to back up.

Google must be constantly monitoring your folders, because changes to files show up immediately. When I made a change to a file on my Mac, the synced file on Google Drive already showed the change by the time I clicked over to check.

Not a restore tool

I'll leave you with a caveat: Backup and Sync is great tool for keeping safe backups of your important files in the cloud, but it is not a replacement for a restore tool. If your computer crashes, you will not be able to use Backup and Sync to restore your OS.

Keep whatever restore tool you're using to back up your computer and think of Backup and Sync as a simple, streamlined replacement for Google Drive and Google Photos -- you no longer need two separate apps to create cloud backups of your files and photos.

And the best part? You no longer need to manually drag files to Google Drive to create those cloud backups. You just point Google to the folders on your computer that you want it to keep an eye on and keep continuously backed up.

I Recently uploaded a .PSD file from work to my personal Google Drive so I can download and work on it at home. Today when I went onto my Google drive to download this file, when I pressed the download button, Drive opened another tab in my browser with an Error 403 'Forbidden' on it. I tried downloading some other files, and none of the other .PSD files on my drive would download either; They also gave me an Error 403. All of my other files were able to download, though.

I do not know why I am all of a sudden not allowed access to my files as this was working just the other day. It seems awfully silly that I am forbidden to access my own files. Is there a workaround for this or am I just going to have to send a disgruntled email to Google about them restricting my access to my files?

Try logging out of all other users in your web browser or use Incognito Mode if your browser has it (which has the effect of doing this). Kudos to Ahmad for saving me with this answer today!

As he clarified (and glenviewjeff and Boynux both suggested in the comments to the OP), either of these approaches seem to help because of a bug with multiple user sign-in. It doesn't even matter if all the accounts signed in are granted permission to download the file; it's something about having more than one account signed in.

I had this happen today with .xlsx files in both Chrome and IE11. In IE11 I saw the same behavior as the OP described here:

'when I pressed the download button, Drive opened another tab in my browser with an Error 403 'Forbidden' on it. .. They also gave me an Error 403.'

In Chrome the behavior was a little different (it opened a download window prompting me to save a file with a long string of random numbers and letters and no file extension; clicking save returned a 'Failed - Forbidden' message in the download tray at the bottom), but the result is the same as the OP's subject line: Google Drive won't let me download my files.

This works for me: Right click on the file, then click on Create shareable link and use that link.

If you have multiple Google Drive accounts, try downloading in a separate browser or in Incognito Mode.

For Chrome, the shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+N.

If you are signed in using multiple account on the same browser, try to logout it first and login again. It works for me.

rfajarachmadrfajarachmad

try to make a copy and download the file.
Before that check the access privilege in sharing.
check whether download option is ticked or not.

The too many users logged into the same browser was the cause of my issue. Rather than log them all out I just selected my name in the very top right of the Chrome browser and selected Guest from the dropdown. This opens a guest user browser and then I logged into the Google Drive account and was able to download the file not problem.

The multiple signed in account problem still exists as of today. Instead of incognito or use different browser, you can have multiple profile within Google Chrome, just switch to the profile with the google account you want to use.
